Kelly Irving seems to be having a mid-life crisis. But then, looking back, all his life he’s been leapfrogging about, from job to job, place to place. These days he has a permanent home on Pender Island, in British Columbia’s beautiful Gulf Islands. There he lives with his wonderful partner Sue, tends the garden, renovates their smallish home and creates artworks. Generally the artwork takes the form of photo based work – so you can be sure to see lots of photos both here on his blog and also on his website: kellyidesign.com.
Instead of buying a sports car, or a huge Harley, Kelly decided to work out his mid-life crisis by becoming a teacher of English as a foreign language (TEFL). In November 2009 he took a CELTA course in Prague, Czech Republic. However, despite his good intentions, he never worked there but instead travelled around Europe, seeing a dozen countries in 6 months. Kelly visited art galleries and museums, walked many a mile and discovered the joys of traveling. Sometimes he travels alone but Sue meets up with Kelly when her ParksCanada job wraps up in the autumn. This then will be their future: Pender in the summer, exotic locales during the rest of the year.
Follow along and see what transpires on this road to somewhere ….
I knew it had to be a mid-life thing! Haaaha.
Can’t wait to visit
Hey Kelly!
Have been enjoying yer blog. Vietnam sounds amazing. Today’s news is typhoons, though, so thought of you. Great stories and pictures, of course!
Good luck with your TEFL career move, seems like you’ve got it goin’ on!
Keep it comin’,
Wow, I knew the storm was coming but didn’t realize how bad it’d be. The landlady at my hotel was showing me photos on a Viet news site this morning and I just saw the BBC’s footage. Nasty. Fellow next door had a friend leaving for Saigon last night. Hope he never got on that train. Meanwhile here in Hanoi there’s been a bit of a sprinkle and there’s thunderstorms in the forecast but the weather’s decent. Glad I’m not touring around, unaware of what might be happening. I’ll be posting on my school experiences soon. Schools are great, it’s the drive that’s scary!
